En Kenia nació un “Zonkey”

La reserva nacional Chyulu Hills, en Kenia, dio a conocer que nació una cría con cuerpo gris rojizo y patas rayadas procedente de la unión  de un burro y una cebra, una mezcla atípica.

“Un ‘zonkey’ es un híbrido muy inusual entre una cebra y un burro”, explicó la organización Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT), que hacía seguimiento del caso.

La madre, una cebra, invadió el año pasado un coto privado y se habituó a vivir con animales domésticos y de pastoreo hasta se hizo eco de la noticia.

El Servicio de Conservación de la Fauna de Kenia (KWS) y la SWT decidieron trasladarla al parque nacional de Chyulu.

Los equipos siguieron monitoreando su adaptación al medio, cuando se dieron cuenta de que estaba embarazada y que el potro al que había dado a luz era atípico.

“Mientras los potros de cebra nacen con rayas blancas y marrones que acaban volviéndose negras, este pequeño tenía sospechosamente pocas rayas y un color abrumandamente rojo”, detalló la SWT.

It was an uneventful translocation, and she has been thriving in her new home ever since. We were pleasantly surprised to recently discover that she had given birth — and that surprise reached new heights when we realized that her foal was not a zebra, but a zebra-donkey hybrid called a zonkey! Zebras have a 12-month gestation period, so it’s not difficult to connect the dots. During her time living with the community last year, she had clearly become acquainted with an amorous donkey. We’re happy to report that mum and baby are in perfect health, and we look forward to watching this unusual family unit continue to flourish.
